Houses
Upon arrival, one of the first things that a wizard or witch does arriving at Hogwarts is to be sorted into one of the 4 houses by the Sorting Hat: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin.
As Professor McGonagall puts in The Sorcerers Stone -> "...your house will be something like your family within Hogwarts. You will have classes with the rest of your house, sleep in your house dormitory, and spend free time in your house common room. The four houses are called Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Each house has its own noble history and each has produced outstanding witches and wizards."

Founder - Godric Gryffindor -> creator of the Sword of Gryffindor and the Sorting Hat
Traits - bravery, honor, loyalty, boldness, recklessness, short tempered

Founder - Salazar Slytherin -> Chamber of Secrets, Basilisk, Locket, and Ring
Traits - cunning, determination, pride, ambition not afraid of breaking or bending rules, proud

Founder - Rowena Ravenclaw -> Diadem and floor plan of Hogwarts
Traits - ambitious, seekers of knowledge, range of skills, opportunity seeker
